The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze gains a new diesel-fueled four-cylinder engine that delivers impressive fuel economy.
In nearly every market where Chevrolet sells its Cruze sedan, it offers an optional diesel engine. North America has been an exception, but that changes for 2014. The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze arrives with GM's next-generation 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel joined to a six-speed automatic transmission. The diesel generates 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and Chevy estimates the diesel-powered Cruze will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds and return 42 highway mpg.
The diesel Cruze will have its work cut out, though. It targets the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, which returns 30 city mpg and 42 highway mpg. But the fuel-sipping Cruze Eco already returns numbers on par with the TDI, so GM is banking on buyers who value fuel economy and love low-end torque. We've briefly driven a European-spec Cruze with the diesel and were impressed with the diesel Cruze's quiet engine operation and strong power at low rpm.
The expectation for 2014 Chevy Cruze diesel to go on sale in the summer of 2013 with a starting price of $25,695. Expect 17-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery and the MyLink infotainment system to come standard.
